Who is Vinicio El Platanero (the Bananaquit)?
Vinicio was actually born on a shade grown coffe farm. His parents built their nest right in a coffee bush! The coffee bush provided great shelter and kept the nest well hidden from predators.
Once Vinicio hatched, he lived in that nest for about two weeks with his three sisters. After two weeks they had all grown too big to stay in the nest so they jumped out together and became
fleedglings. They all enjoyed the rest of the spring running and hopping in the coffee bushes, learning how to fly, and learning how to capture food.
Vinicio soon learned how to hunt for his own food: he learned how to get nectar out of flowers, how to tell when fruit was ripe and ready to set, and ho to catch small insects and spiders! He also learned how to make a nest so he would have his own place
to sleep at night. Because he was able to find so much food to eat in the shade grown coffee and because he had many trees to hide and sleep in, he decided that when he grew up, he was going to make a home there too!
Now Vinicio el Platanero ives on the same shade coffee farm that he was born in. He visits often his parents and sisters, and has made a lot of other bird friends. You will often find him happily singing away while looking for ripe fruit to eat or fresh
flower nectar to drink.
